Second Faculty of
Science LTA Development Day 06/01/16 This
event ran successfully earlier this month and attracted 30 colleagues from
across the Faculty. The focus of the event was ‘Learning Technologies within
the Classroom’ and presentations from the day for colleagues unable to attend
are available via the LTA Website here.
The
event started with the outcomes of two recent surveys that gave insights into
the experiences of our students, notably in respect of non-academic
commitments such as paid work. The potential role of technologies in
supporting such students was discussed and the morning session considered two
interactive classroom technologies: Textwall
and Learning Catalytics.
The latter included a review from Sports Science over their mixed experiences
of using this new product from Pearson Education during a pilot study. The
afternoon session was devoted to the video recording of lectures and included
reflections from academics within Sports Science and a brief guide to the Panopto software available via the JMU App Player. Colleagues wishing to obtain a free USB
boundary microphone for use with this program can contact Jim
Turner. I have used this device and it connects seamlessly to LJMU
PCs. Panopto may present an error on first-time
installation, but this can be ignored and the system works as it should:
Video recordings appear in the ‘Video’ tab of the Blackboard module selected
when setting up the recording. The
average satisfaction for the event was 90% and this represents an improvement
from the 78% recorded for last year’s event. Other feedback collected on the
day will be used to inform next year’s Development Day. |

Photos for Class (Thanks to Chris Gillies) Finding good quality, non-copyright images can be a chore
and the need to reference/credit the creator presents further barriers. The Photos
for Class website streamlines the whole process. Simply type in a search term and it will
explore Flickr for good quality Creative Commons
images. Then, when you download an
image, it will automatically add a watermark with the relevant attribution
information (see example below). |
