Second Faculty of Science LTA Development Day 06/01/16

This event ran successfully earlier this month and attracted 30 colleagues from across the Faculty. The focus of the event was ‘Learning Technologies within the Classroom’ and presentations from the day for colleagues unable to attend are available via the LTA Website here.

The event started with the outcomes of two recent surveys that gave insights into the experiences of our students, notably in respect of non-academic commitments such as paid work. The potential role of technologies in supporting such students was discussed and the morning session considered two interactive classroom technologies: Textwall and Learning Catalytics. The latter included a review from Sports Science over their mixed experiences of using this new product from Pearson Education during a pilot study.

The afternoon session was devoted to the video recording of lectures and included reflections from academics within Sports Science and a brief guide to the Panopto software available via the JMU App Player. Colleagues wishing to obtain a free USB boundary microphone for use with this program can contact Jim Turner. I have used this device and it connects seamlessly to LJMU PCs. Panopto may present an error on first-time installation, but this can be ignored and the system works as it should: Video recordings appear in the ‘Video’ tab of the Blackboard module selected when setting up the recording.

The average satisfaction for the event was 90% and this represents an improvement from the 78% recorded for last year’s event. Other feedback collected on the day will be used to inform next year’s Development Day.

Learning & Teaching Conference 2016

The fifteenth Annual LJMU Teaching and Learning Conference will take place on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th June 2016. If you wish to present then submissions must be received by 8th February 2016.  The submission form is here.

Curriculum Enhancement Project Funding 2015-16

Following the funding rounds in 2014-15, further funds have been made available by the Offices of the Vice Chancellor and Pro Vice Chancellor (Education) to support Curriculum Enhancement Projects across the institution.  Proposals are invited under three enhancement project funding streams:

 1.  Responsive: projects outside the theme identified below, but aligned with School/Department/Faculty/University strategic plans.

2.    ‘Adopt a Scheme’: projects that adopt and embed previously funded curriculum enhancement interventions into a different programme of study/academic discipline.  Funded projects can be found in LJMU-Share.

3.    Thematic: the specified theme is ‘Building Collaborative Learning Communities’ with the focus on Directed Study Weeks 2016-17.

Funding is available for proposals between £5,000 and £20,000. Any staff member who is permanent, or on a fixed-term contract of three or more years, and on the payroll of Liverpool John Moores University may apply. Proposals need to be submitted on this form to the Associate Dean Education, Phil Denton, by Friday 26th February 2016.

HEFCE Catalyst funded STEM Employer Engagement workshop 18/02/16

The University Alliance and the University of Lincoln recently published a HEFCE Catalyst funded report titled ‘Mind the Gap: Engaging employers to secure the future of STEM in higher education’. As part of this project, a workshop will be delivered at Liverpool John Moores University and it is open to all universities. The workshops are targeted at university practitioners who work in STEM, employer engagement and graduate employability.

The session will share the findings from the report, present good practice case studies and offer up some practical activities to encourage more employer engagement in STEM. There will also be an interactive session run by the Higher Education Academy to introduce their Embedding Employability in Higher Education Framework.

The workshop takes place 1-4pm at Egerton Court, Rodney Street, on Thursday 18th February 2016 and you must register your interest here by Friday 5th February 2016.

Royal Society of Biology Learning & Teaching Workshop 15/03/16

The next workshop is entitled ‘Exploring The Research Experience of our Students’ and takes place at the University of East Anglia 10am-4pm, Tuesday 15th March  2016. The focus of this workshop is an exploration of what research means to students at different stages of their education and further details can be found here.

This event would be eligible for Faculty funding to support transport and accommodation costs. You would be asked to produce a report on the event for dissemination via the Faculty LTA website. Please contact the Associate Dean (Education), Phil Denton, by Friday 5th February with expressions of interest.

Photos for Class (Thanks to Chris Gillies)

Finding good quality, non-copyright images can be a chore and the need to reference/credit the creator presents further barriers.  The Photos for Class website streamlines the whole process.  Simply type in a search term and it will explore Flickr for good quality Creative Commons images.  Then, when you download an image, it will automatically add a watermark with the relevant attribution information (see example below).
