Webinar Justice-involved students Fri 28th Jan 2022 1300-1430h

“What do we know about the University experience of justice-involved students?,” is the title of this TLA-hosted workshop, delivered by Dr Helena Gosling (Programme Leader Criminal Justice).  It will be of interest to all academic staff, particularly Personal Tutors, and is based on research undertaken by Helena.  For further details and to book please visit here.

Request for good practices: Large groups & Visualisers

As part of good practice sharing, I’m keen to hear of any effective approaches to large groups and the use of visualisers (document cameras) in teaching. Based on an initial review, some existing approaches to large group management can be found here and any additions to this resource are welcome. As visualisers have now replaced whiteboards in many classrooms, it would be particularly interesting to hear about practices that they have facilitated that were not possible previously. Please email any examples related to these two themes to the Associate Dean (Education).

Funding for generic teaching-related events

A reminder that staff wishing to attend a subject-specific teaching-related event should seek funding through their School in the first instance. If the event is generic then please contact the Associate Dean (Education) regarding Faculty funding.

Discover update Thanks to Carolyn Benny, Library Services

Discover is the name of the library search tool and it has recently been upgraded. Full details are on the Library blog under the article ‘Discover enhancement is here’.

Note that the browse function within Databases A-Z and e-journals A-Z has been removed: search by keyword or use the Subject Categories to find relevant databases.  For search results (image left), the COURSE logo means that the item appears on a module reading list on Canvas.

Teaching-related snippets

If you visit Attendance > Reports > Individual student > Taps, it shows all the occasions when a student tapped their card on an attendance reading device, regardless of whether or not this was as part of a scheduled class (thanks to Jack Butterworth, ITS).

A small project has started to look into providing laptop parking spaces (LPS) in the James Parsons’ third floor IT suites, each with an accompanying chair. A fixed cabinet in each suite could provide loan laptops, one per LPS, modestly uplifting our IT suite capacities. If you have any thoughts, please email Associate Dean (Education)

Walkabout Weeks are formally suspended this academic year due to COVID. Look out for their return in 2022/23!

>

Students exempt from mask wearing and wanting a sunflower lanyard can visit the disability drop-in centre in the Student Life Building, 10-16h weekdays (thanks to Adam O’Neil, SAW).
