Good practice sharing

Large group management and teaching

·         Use the “My Engagement” (LDE system) to facilitate personal tutor-tutee discussions about engagement.

·         Skew the Level 3/4 Personal Tutoring schedule so that it is weighted in favour of Semester 1 where it is likely to have more of a profound impact,

·         Offer informal networking through social activities during the year, recognising the ‘new breed’ of indoor entertainment centres e.g. PINS on Duke St and Ghetto Golf on Stanhope St.

·         Programme community sites enable FAQs to be collated and responded to efficiently, rather than through individual emails.

·         Offer regular drop in surgery sessions within the Student Social Zone: even if these are not used by students, they will be aware of staff presence.

·         Publish a regular programme newsletter to publicise activities, celebrate successes and share contemporary research stories.

·         In lecture theatres, Vevox Q&A provides a channel for students to submit comments and queries. Key principles:

o   Create a safe space with house rules and moderation,

o   Number of ‘likes’ can indicate strength of feeling,

o   Staff can respond to comments verbally in class or retrospectively, via upload to Canvas.

o   The Vevox survey tool can provide useful medium for mid-module evaluation as students can complete in their own time.
