Technology in Teaching and Learning

Classrooms

All staff are reminded that it would be prudent to visit the rooms where you are first due to teach beforehand: log on to the front-of-house PC, check your USB devices e.g. slide advancer, and open software you intend to use e.g. Panopto. To check room availability in Week zero, search for Week 52 in the 2020/21 Room timetable. Log any issues on the IT Helpdesk/x5555.

Zoom (thanks to Teaching and Learning Academy, TLA)

Follow these good practices to avoid issues:

> Use Zoom through Canvas; a reminder that other use is not supported by the TLA.

> Do not copy ‘Events’ when using Canvas Course Copy as Zoom meetings, that can no longer be joined, will be copied over: these would need to be manually deleted.

> Support for Zoom is through Helpdesk and cannot be instantaneous. Advice is to set up a low-stakes test event before first ‘proper’ use.

See My Tutor (SMT)

A reminder that all full-time staff should offer four hours of availability per week through See My Tutor for ad-hoc meetings with students. The easiest way to accomplish this is to set up recurring appointments: SMT will not offer times to students if they clash with another ‘busy’ event in your calendar.

Panopto (thanks to IT Services)

This is the University’s lecture recording system, available via the App Player. During lockdown, most classrooms have been fitted with radio microphones that link to both Panopto and the classroom PA system. We are advised that the output of visualisers is now captured by Panopto.

Endnote (thanks to Library Services)

LJMU will not be moving to EndNote 20 this year due to compatibility issues: EndNote libraries cannot be stored on cloud based storage systems e.g. OneDrive. Carolyn Benny can address queries.

Learning Science Virtual laboratories

These are again stored in Canvas Course code NCSCI30. Five new simulations have recently being added: i) Flow Cytometry: Fundamentals, ii) Haematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) Stain, iii) Bradford Assay, iv) Floral Diagrams and Floral Formulae, and V) Dressing for the Clinic.

Talking about Teaching 2021/22

The Faculty’s Peer Review Scheme continues this year and will be re-launched once the academic year has settled down a little. We are aiming to improve on the 2020/21 report participation rate of 62%.

Module Evaluation (ME) changes (thanks to the TLA)

> Based on feedback from staff and students, ME will run in the last two weeks of teaching across all modules.

> Only negative free text comments will be redacted for names/identifying features. Staff will remain identifiable from positive comments.

> Given recent changes in legislation, an additional question be included in the survey that specifically addresses accessibility of digital resources.

Teaching-related snippets

>

There will be no lab coat printing this year as it is difficult to operate as a COVID secure exercise.

>

Academic diaries for new UG students are delayed due to delivery disruption ETA 12th-26th October.

>

A reminder that there is a Canvas Course to guide Personal Tutors:

>

The Faculty Education Committee (FEC) considered poor academic practice: substandard scholarship that inadvertently contravenes convention. As not deliberate, this is not Academic Misconduct. However, the assessor may adjust marks accordingly within the mark scheme for referencing, originality etc. Students should be made aware of their poor academic practice, ideally with follow-up discussions.
