Learning Analytics Presentation (thanks to
Ross Dawson) Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis
and reporting of data about students, for the purposes of understanding and
optimising learning. Nottingham Trent University (NTU) have undertaken much
work in this area and Ann Liggett, NTU Teaching and Learning Co-ordinator,
will be visiting LJMU to present their work and discuss its educational merit.
The presentation takes place Monday 14th March 2016 3pm-430pm,
venue TBC. Please email p.denton@ljmu.ac.uk
if you wish to attend. |

Using Item Analysis with Blackboard Tests
(thanks to Jim Turner) This 5 minute video
shows how to us this feature within Blackboard. It enables tutors to view the effectiveness
of Blackboard test questions. This
includes questions that do not discriminate between low- and high-achieving
students and those that were found to be difficult. |

Internationalising the Curriculum Conference
(thanks to Janice Harland) Nottingham Trent University, July 14th 2016,
9:30-16:30h "Internationalising
the curriculum" is a common goal in the strategies of Universities
across the globe. However, implementing international objectives and
opportunities into the design and delivery of the curriculum can present challenges. Research suggests that academic staff
involvement is key to effective implementation of internationalising
strategies and essential for ensuring student engagement with the
international opportunities and support structures that are made available to
them. This is especially the case for
initiatives designed to increase internationalisation at home as these
require carefully contextualised curriculum adaptations. Registration
for this event is not yet open, but Faculty funding would be available to
support attendance and the recipient would draft a report for dissemination
upon their return. Please email p.denton@ljmu.ac.uk by Friday March 4th
2016 with expressions of interest. |

Survey: Use of e-learning
resources in life sciences (thanks to Janice Harland) Dave
Lewis, Senior Lecturer in Neuroscience & Bioethics at the University of
Leeds, asks for 5 minutes of your time to complete a survey. It relates to staff attitudes around the
use of electronic learning resources in life sciences education, as well as
trying to identify the barriers to the use of technology in teaching.
The survey which can be found at https://leeds.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/e-resources-physiology |

Institutional
Surveys’ Timeline 2015-2016 (thanks to Elena Zaitseva) This

groups are involved. |

Microsoft OneNote (thanks to Chris Gillies) This software is a great note taking tool and it has
an impressive optical character recognition (OCR) function which can make
text in pictures searchable and editable.
This function could be great for cataloguing and sifting through text
in various media and also for when you need to quickly modify non-editable
printed or screen-based text. Whether you have a photo of pages in a book, an
academic poster or a report, once in OneNote, you can apply OCR by simply
right clicking on the image and selecting ‘Copy text from picture’ or ‘Make
text searchable’. You can also ask
OneNote to automatically make text searchable in all images added in the
future. OneNote is installed on all staff and student PCs
already and it can be found within the Microsoft Office suite, under ‘All
programs’. Even better, it is also
available as a free app for Windows, Apple and Android phones/tablets. Installing it on your mobile devices should
make the process of taking a photo and then pasting the text into an email,
paper, handbook or report even easier. Chris has kindly put together a 2 minute video on using OneNote’s OCR on an
LJMU PC. |
