Introducing: The Faculty Wellbeing Team

Vanessa Caddick and Kim Rowlands (right) are our links with the Student Advice and Wellbeing (SAW) team. Both Vanessa and Kim have worked previously at Byrom St and will be offering support to students in a variety of ways:

·       A presence at the Byrom St campus by pre-booked appointment.

·       A permanent drop-in at the Student Life Building (Mon-Fri 10am – 4pm), no appointment needed.

·       A dedicated ‘phone line 0151 231 3664 and email: studentwellbeing@ljmu.ac.uk.

If there’s anything they can support you with then email SAW.

Forthcoming Events

·       Exam Hall Simulation for students. Given students’ relative inexperience with in-person exams, we’re offering a chance for them to experience the typical operation of an exam (without the need to answer questions). Students will be contacted about this event, taking place in Week 7.

·       Tue 8th Nov 2022: BioRender training session. All staff have access to this faculty-supported program upon request and an invite for this training session will be sent via Outlook.

·        Fri 11th Nov 2022: Decolonial Approaches in Teaching and Research. This good practice sharing event takes place in the Student Life Building and registration is open. The deadline for submissions is now Friday 30th September.

·        7th-10th Nov 2022. A 1 hr session led by the Assistant Academic Registrars to discuss how we respond to students’ mitigating circumstances. Precise date-time confirmed via Outlook invite.

Reporting issues with classrooms

·       A reminder that, as part of a new joined-up approach, all transient issues with classrooms should be reported to Helpdesk in the first instance via 5555 or online via HelpMe. The appropriate team will then be assigned (normally Estates for fixtures and fittings, IT Services for AV and IT issues).

·       If there is an issue that goes beyond the above and you think that a particular classroom has a permanent flaw e.g. needs complete refurbishment, then please report these to me for progressing via the Learning Environment Panel.

Teaching technologies

·       Recording lectures via Panopto remains opt-in although student feedback is universally favourable. Not all taught sessions are suitable for recording and there is guidance.

·       The University of Edinburgh have been producing online video content for distance courses for a number of years and offer a four-hour online course to share their expertise.

·       If you require a PowerPoint clicker or USB microphone (as a back-up device for recording lectures), please email me. Webcams and headset etc. can be order via IT Services.

·       3D printing and scanning, virtual and augmented reality, Raspberry Pi and Arduino kits are all available via the LJMU digital studio based at the Student Life Building.

Returning activities

·         Our Faculty of Science Teaching Awards (FoSTAs) are back for their second year and nominations will open later this Semester.

·         After a COVID hiatus, both Walkabout Weeks and our lab coat name printing facilities will make a return this year.

·         Our Peer Review scheme, Talking about Teaching continues in 2022/23 after recording its highest participation rate yet in 2021/22.
