LJMU Teaching and Learning Excellence Awards 2022

Following our excellent showings in 2020 and 2021, Science was once again the top-performing Faculty. All six of our award nominees were successful, including nominated staff who were recipients of a 2022 FoSTA (Faculty of Science Teaching Award). Our congratulations to:

Students at the Heart Conference: Registration now open!

In addition to a full programme of sessions, the conference will also feature an International Student Fair, art show, cake sale and student intern journalists who will document the two days. Registration will close at 1pm on Friday 10 June and the programme shows the contribution of Science staff and students:

Our new curriculum management system replaces both ModCat and ProdCat and staff training commences in July Sept for a Sept 2022 start. A demonstration of courseloop takes place during the Students at the Heart Conference 1050 – 1120h Wed 15th June, Room TBC.

The project has three phases: 1) Modcat and Prodcat replacement, 2) online course catalogue and marketing information, 3) mapping (to professional body requirements) functionality. It is anticipated that phase 3 will take place next summer.

Deprecation of Zoom 2021/22

The term deprecation is used within computing to indicate the discouragement of usage of a particular program or software feature. In this case, the University is ending the use of Zoom for teaching, MS Teams being the standard platform for the next academic year. This blog post from the Teaching and Learning Academy discusses the use of MS Teams in teaching.

Postgraduate Teaching Experience Survey (PTES)

A reminder to all PGT tutors that is open until Fri 17th June and the Faculty is funding six £50 Amazon vouchers in a prize draw for to all survey participants. All students have been provided with a personal link and a generic link. For the generic link, the username is the student’s LJMU log-in name in uppercase (e.g. PHCPDENT) and the password is pgtvoice

LearnSci virtual laboratory simulations (labsims) on Canvas

LearnSci are able to map their resources to our labs. Please send lab manuals to support@learnsci.com to have this completed for you. NB LearnSci will be unavailable for up to one hour from 0930h Thur 9th June for essential maintenance.

Seminars, training sessions and resources

Digital Accessibility With around 1 in 10 LJMU students declaring a disability, many struggle with digital content. Here are some relatively straightforward actions that we can take to may our content more accessible.

Northern Irish Student Experience Event Student Life Building, Thur June 9 1300-1600h. These students face particular challenges that often go undetected, manifest in lower continuation and attainment rates. This event provides opportunities to inform the future direction of support for Northern Irish students.

Peer review 2021/22 – last chance to record your activity

To date, 159 (68%) of Faculty staff have registered their involvement in Talking about teaching, the Faculty’s version of the LJMU peer review scheme. If you have engaged in a qualifying activity then please record your participation via our online form by Tuesday 31st May.
