LTA updates

30/09/13

1) Mathematics Resource and Support Centre, MRSC (Thanks to Leslie Fletcher, Centre Co-ordinator)

The MRSC is new and its staff would like to spread the word of what it can offer to students struggling with the numerical, mathematical or statistical content of their courses: http://www.staff.ljmu.ac.uk/phcpdent/tempjan2013.pdf

2) Fetchit! And LinkSource (thanks to Gillian Williams, Library Services)

The University’s Discover search tool is displayed prominently on the Student LJMU homepage and can be used to interrogate the library's collection of print and online resources. LinkSource is an enhancement to Discover and replaced FetchIt! over the summer. For searches done within Discover, the LinkSource icon appears adjacent to records where LJMU staff and students can access the material either in print or electronic format. Library Services previously found that a common complaint from students was that, having identified some papers, they could not access the full-text. Discover users are now able to filter searches for articles available as “Print and Online full text”.

The link to the University of Liverpool is no longer available on LinkSource as this new service is purposefully restricted to resources that students can readily access. Library Services are currently investigating if they can add a link to the University of Liverpool elsewhere on the Discover page and heavy users could then choose to add this link to their favourites.

3) Blackboard/Mobile support

In the last two years, Tom Dutton and Jade Davies acted as the Faculty Learning Technology Officers (LTOs) and could assist staff with Blackboard queries. The University is not funding LTOs this year but online support is available by emailing helpdesk@ljmu.ac.uk. If you, or your students, have any issues configuring your mobile device to work with LJMU systems, then Harry Morton and his team (Rm 321a James Parsons) can help.

4) Turning Point

As indicated in the last update, the latest version of Turning Point is available on the App Player alongside the original (Legacy) version. If you use the new version then everything works fine, although your file will be converted and there is no backwards-compatibility i.e. you will not then be able to open a converted file on the Legacy version (thanks to Andrew Powell).

A reminder that there is a known bug in the Legacy version and you should not click hyperlinks that are embedded within PowerPoint slides during a Turning Point session. The advice has always been to open any hyperlink before running Turning Point. This bug does not appear to affect the new version (thanks to Jim Turner).

5) Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey 2013

This has now been published and the free text comments will be of interest to staff whose programmes did not meet the threshold for individual reports. Please contact me if you want a copy.
