Generative AI and Coursework

Hallucinated references are one way in which students’ over-reliance on generative AI is revealed. Doubtless, this issue will disappear as technology develops. In the meantime, staff have noted that, by including bibliographic materials in Turnitin plagiarism detection, errant citations are revealed because they have never been submitted previously.

Workshops on MMU’s multidimensional model of assessment (MDMA) are ongoing. To date, this approach to assessment design for a GenAI-enabled world has been generally well received by 58 attendees from nine Schools within HITS. The next two workshops are:

#5 Mon 14 Jul, 1100-1230h, Tithebarn Building 122 (in person)

#6 Wed 16 Jul, 1030-1200h, James Parsons Building 506 (in person)

No need to register in advance (see my email sent Thu 03/07/2025 for invites).

Aligned with the above, the ROCKS protocol (Role, Objective, Community, Key, Shape) has been developed to reduce GenAI users’ carbon footprints.

Feedback Fruits

This resource outlines the five tools available within Feedback Fruits to support assessment. Many of these tools enable tasks that move away from traditional written exercises to more meaningful work that requires genuine understanding on the part of the student. The five tools are; Interactive Documents, Peer Review, Comprehension, Interactive Video and Interactive Audio.

Teaching and Learning Academy updates:

> SFHEA Dialogue Route: After a successful pilot in 2024/25, LJMU colleagues who wish to avoid writer’s cramp can achieve AdvanceHE Senior Fellowship (SFHEA) in 2026 through a professional dialogue programme: Details are here

> Lecture Capture: The current ‘opt-in’ policy, where staff can decide whether or not to record their lectures (most likely using the Panopto software), will remain in place for 2025/26 while technical upgrades are explored.

Deprecation of Websites and Software

> The online COMPASS resource for structuring GenAI permissions guidance has been removed from the web given extra detail in the new LJMU Assessment and Feedback policy, recently endorsed by Academic Board. Registry will be releasing communications from next week but if you would like any guidance on providing GenAI permissions to students in the meantime, please email p.denton@ljmu.ac.uk.

> As indicated in my email 24 June 2025, our licence for the LearnSci LabSims will not be renewed for 2025/26 onward. I will be in touch in due course with details of a repository of alternate resources.

> The Faculty of Science LTA Website, of which this page is part, will be taken down on Wed 23rd July in preparation for our transition to our new HITS Faculty structure from 1st August. If you require any pages after this date, please contact me as I will retain an archive of the website.

Upgrading to Windows 11

A reminder to prioritise upgrading in the next few weeks to avoid the possibility of finding yourself among a potential avalanche of upgrades nearer the deadline (31 August 2025).

Thank you…

… for reading this far through the newsletter and (presumably) my previous missives.

Our inaugural HITS Associate Dean (Education and Student Experience) will be in post from 1st August and will be in touch with updates and news.

I note that the first edition of Abstract (in September 2016) had advice for staff upgrading to Windows 10. Plus ça change 😊
