Generative AI and assessment

One message emerging from a workshop at the recent Faculty Day concerned staff confidence around assessment redesign for the GenAI era. A workshop attendee from the HITS Faculty School of Mathematics and Computing, Martin Hanneghan, referred to this online resource developed by MMU.

Colleagues may appreciate the systematic approach described; it can be used to develop assessments as multifaceted challenges, blending various cognitive processes and skills, and examples are provided.

Peer Observation and Reflection

Our peer exchange scheme continues this year and observation pairs have been shared with participating academic staff in BES, PBS and SPS. Please add your name to the online declaration form when you have completed your activity (in either the observer or observee role). To date, 39 colleagues have recorded their participation, a 16% response rate.

The LJMU Board of Governors have requested an Uniac audit of ‘Teaching on My Course’ and we might reasonably expect increased scrutiny of any initiatives designed to develop teaching practice, such as Peer Observation and Reflection.

HITS Teaching and Student Support Awards 2025

The nomination form is open until Friday 13th December and we have received 31 submissions to date; four for BES, seven for PBS, four for SPS and five for HITS (Faculty) staff. These totals include multiple suggestions for the same person/team. Over the past two years, the average number of SMT-endorsed awards per area has been around half-a-dozen.

> Training for Faculty Observers: The TLA are looking to expand their pool of trained observers to support new teaching staff undertaking the PGCert in Academic Practice.  In this role, you would observe a colleague and provide feedback on their teaching.  This is a pass/fail observation for the student who then subsequently reflects on the experience and feedback. If you have a minimum of two years’ teaching experience and would be interested in becoming a Faculty Trained Observer, please email Rachel Boulter r.m.boulter@ljmu.ac.uk.

> Student Experience Proceedings:  The archive of this online open journal includes abstracts and PowerPoint slides from previous Students at the Heart Conferences, in addition to a collection of case studies of activities undertaken in response to the COVID-19 lockdown.

JMSU Student Experience Awards 2025

The nomination form is now open and colleagues may wish to nominate their students in the following categories: Outstanding Course Rep, Outstanding Teaching Support Officer (including PGRs), Outstanding Postgraduate Researcher, and Outstanding Student Leader (School Reps, Community Leaders or Academic Society Committee Members).

SeeMyTutor and PC Forms: the students’ view

A reminder that SeeMyTutor has a new feature here that enables you to see what the student sees, a useful facility for introducing your classes to this appointment-booking tool.  Following staff rep feedback at our Faculty Education and Student Experience Committee (FESEC), a helpdesk request has been made for a comparable ‘student view’ of the PC application form.
