Focus on celebrating and developing teaching within the Faculty

NEW Faculty of Science Teaching Awards (FOSTAs) 2022

Our Faculty Learning, Teaching and Assessment Newsletter, Abstract, is sponsoring our new Teaching Awards. Their aim is twofold:

·         to recognise good practice by our academic colleagues,

·         to celebrate teaching within the Faculty of Science.

An online form will be circulated to academics next week and staff can nominate colleagues by providing a short citation. For our Faculty Teaching awards, there is no requirement for nominees to have an external aspect to their work.

SMTs will confirm their School’s winners later this year, taking into account the online nominations received. Our nominees for an institutional honour, the LJMU Teaching Excellence Awards, will be drawn from those Faculty Award winners with an external aspect to their work

NEW Funding for generic teaching-related events and student internships

·       Staff wishing to attend a subject-specific teaching-related event e.g. a PRSB-hosted teaching conference, can seek funding through their School in the first instance. If the event is generic e.g. the Assessment in HE conference, then please contact the Associate Dean (Education) regarding Faculty funding.

·       In Spring 2022, three Faculty-funded student internships will be made available to support curriculum enhancement work. Details of the bidding process will be confirmed in the new year.

Talking about Teaching 2021/22

The Faculty’s Peer Review Scheme continues this year and your Subject Lead will discuss arrangements within your team. Staff can register their participation through the dedicated form, closing date 8th April 2022. Colleagues who attend teaching-related discussion events, not part of scheduled commitments, may also complete the form. For example, attendees at the event below have been recorded as participants in this year’s scheme.

SPS Assessment and Feedback Event (thanks to Ian Sadler)

This took place on 15th October 2021 and featured two external contributors: Prof Kay Sambell from the University of Cumbria and Prof Sally Brown, an independent consultant. The session included two presentations with a central theme of making assessment both manageable and fit for purpose. Both are available as narrated PowerPoint slides:

Part 1 Designing more authentic, learning-oriented assessment tasks

Part 2 Designing feedback to support and promote learning

>  The view for Upcoming Appointments now includes more quick links e.g. to student’s attendance record and LDE (if you have access e.g. as their PT).

>  New Help FAQ page and improved facilities to amend availabilities.

Decolonising the Curriculum (DTC) Canvas site and EDIpedia

·        The Decolonising the Curriculum Canvas site reflects the efforts of the LJMU DTC working group, chaired by Nicola Koyama (BES). The site serves as a live repository of resources on approaches to decolonising the curriculum for all staff.

·        EDIpedia is our online database of profiles of scholars from underrepresented groups who have contributed to the development of specific STEM-discipline knowledge.

·        Both resources have had considerable input from the Faculty and reflect the vibrancy of our equality, diversity and equality (EDI) related work.
