Teaching and Learning Academy (TLA) plan for the next 12 months

Replacement of Zoom with Teams from 2022/23

Developments between Canvas and Microsoft now allow for a greater integration between our VLE and MS Teams. This will facilitate the timetabling of live, online sessions, as well as in-class activities. In addition, using Teams within Canvas can support collaborative working between students. Switching from Zoom to Teams for teaching from 2022/23 raises understandable concerns, for example, breakout room facilities and the extra bandwidth demands of MS Teams. We have been assured that Teams is under constant development and that no functionality or user experience will be lost during the transition from Zoom to Teams for teaching; Teams already support breakout rooms, for example.

Over the next 12 months, the TLA will begin to refocus training towards MS Teams, with a reduction in Zoom training sessions and an increase in MS Teams’ training. In addition, and in consultation with IT Services, the TLA will produce guidance for staff and students regarding the use and application of MS Teams. The TLA will continue to provide guidance around academic practice and delivery in Zoom during 2021/22.

Training events (Thanks to Jim Turner)

Details of Academy training is available at the learning technology site and in the training calendar.  To contact the TLA, please email: TLAcademy@ljmu.ac.uk

>

Attendance at online sessions has been high and the TLA intends to continue to offer most training virtually to maximise engagement and convenience, regardless of the institutional position on home or office-based work.  This position will be reviewed periodically.

>

During the summer, the TLA will offer a schedule of online training events, supplemented by a range of asynchronous training materials to meet individual needs.  In addition, depending on the availability of Academy staff, academics can always request a one-to-one or a small group session.

>

The TLA is always seeking to provide the best guidance in using a range of tools and methods. If there are any particular areas where you would like to see new session then please contact the TLA.

>

The TLA encourages colleagues to meet with like-minded individuals to share and develop practice around particular themes or technologies. There are six networks at present, but please contact the TLA if there is a particular area that you would like them to help you grow and support.

>

The TLA will be offering ongoing, short innovations in practice sessions for LJMU teaching staff disseminate and discuss their emerging practice. If you have an idea to share, please contact the TLA.

Learning Science 2021/22

Given positive feedback through the recent consultation and ~20,000 unique interactions during 2020/21, we have renewed the Learning Science licence for another year. As in the previous year, simulations are available via the Canvas module NCSCI30 and this includes the guide, “How to add a LearnSci LabSim to your VLE/LMS”.

Enhancing Digital Teaching and Learning (EDTL) in Irish Universities (thanks to Elena Zaitseva)

EDTL is a three year project, due to end in September 2022, and aimed at enhancing the digital attributes and educational experiences of Irish university students. The resource includes material aimed at students and staff, the latter including  module and programme approach for remote learning.

Loan laptops

IT Services have confirmed that there will be 48 loan laptops available to students for casual use from the Student Social Zone for 2021/22.
